Advanced Repeating Events |
|
Thyme's advanced repeating event features may be overwhelming to some at first. However, once you get the hang of it, you'll find it a very powerful tool. Many scheduling programs lack the ability to schedule an occurence as simple as the 1st and 15th of every month.
With advanced repeating you may make an event repeat on:
- every Friday the 13th
- the first Saturday OR Sunday of the month, which ever comes first
- Good Friday
- the first Tuesday of November, on or after the 2nd of the month
Below you'll find some examples to get you started as well as detailed explanations.
To select advanced repeating for an event, edit an event (or create a new one), select the Repeating tab, then click on 'advanced.'
This event is now in advanced repeating mode. Repeating modes are mutually exclusive. Once an event is in advanced repeating mode, saving it in 'simple' mode may drop some of it's repeating rules.
To start, choose the minumum length of time an event may go without repeating.
every Friday the 13th
For our first example, we'll use every Friday the 13th. The minimum length of time between occurrences of this event is 1 month, so the Monthly tab must be selected. From here, start with your least specific rule. Our least specific rule will be every Friday.
Under the Weekdays section, select every Friday and click on the Add button. Now to be more specific, this event will fall on every Friday that is ALSO the 13th of the month.
Under the Month Days section, select 13 and click on the Add button. Now the event will repeat every Friday of every month that falls on the 13th of the month. This is exemplified in the screenshot below:
the first Saturday OR Sunday of the month, which ever comes first
Our next example will create an event that repeats on the first Saturday or Sunday of the month, which ever one comes first.
The minimum length of time between occurrences is 1 Month, so the Monthly tab should be selected. From here, we start with our least specific rule. That would be the first Saturday and the first Sunday of every month.
Under the Weekdays section select first Saturday and click on the Add button. The select first Sunday and click on the Add button. As-is, this event will repeat on the first Sunday and first Saturday of every month. Of these occurrences with in this month, we only want the event to occur on
the first one that matches our rules.
Under the Specific Occurrences section, select 1 and click the Add button. This event will now occur on the first Saturday or first Sunday of the month, which ever occurs first in any given month. This is exemplified in the screen shot below:
Good Friday
Thyme includes the ability to calculate Easter every year. Since this date varies each year based on a lunar cycle, Thyme has included a special rule for it.
In the Easter Yearly tab, you may select recurrences that happen in relation to Easter. Good Friday occurs on the Friday before Easter or 2 days before Easter Sunday.
To achieve this, select the Easter Yearly tab and enter 2 in the text box. This is exemplified in the screenshot below:
the first Tuesday of November, on or after the 2nd of the month
Our last example will create an event that repeats on the first Tuesday of November, on or after the 2nd of the month. The minimum amount of time between an occurence of this event, so select the Yearly tab.
For weekdays, click on the Tuesday checkbox. For months, click on November.
The first Tuesday on or after the second of the month can possibly occur on the 2nd-8th. Select each of these days under Month Days and click on the Add button. Only 7 days will be selected, so Tuesday can only possibly occur once, therefor no additional rules are needed. The resulting settings are exemplified in the screen shot below:
